Winter is the peak season for house fires. Today we are going to look at some great tips to keep your family safe during the holidays. Kitchen fires are becoming more and more frequent as more people are distracted and busy multi-tasking in the kitchen. Before you bake, broil, grill, or fry, remember these tips for fireproofing your feasts!
-Always have someone on cooking duty. If you must leave the room, turn off the cooking equipment first.
-Limit distractions by planning TV time, video chats, chores and other activities before or after, but not during meal prep time.
-Divert traffic away from the kitchen by putting kids’ snacks, games and toys in another room.
– Just like driving, avoid cooking if you are extremely tired or have consumed a large amount of alcohol.
-Smother grease fires with a metal lid or baking soda. Never use water in this situation, and make sure to turn off the heat source first. If a fire starts in the oven, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.
-Have a fully functional fire extinguisher close at hand. They can be purchased at your local retailer for around $25.
There are several other steps you can take, beyond cooking, to help prevent house fires.
-Be careful not to overload electrical outlets with heaters.
-Unplug holiday lights and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.
-Make sure to use lights and extension cords in their proper indoor or outdoor location.
-Examine holiday light strands for wear and tear before using them.
Don’t connect more than three strands of lights together.
-Always keep burning candles in sight and away from children, pets and holiday decorations.
-Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors and replace dead batteries.
