What Causes Rust on Roof Flashing?

Roof flashing is a vitally important part of your roof, even though you do not really see it. It is usually made of metal and is used to seal edges where the roof meets an outside wall, around a vent, or near a window. This performs an essential function – protecting against leaks and dry rot. Just like any other piece of metal that is exposed to air and moisture, however, flashing can weaken over time and even rust.

Flashing is extremely important to the structure of the roof. Without it, your roof is essentially worthless. This means we should keep an eye on the roof flashing and make sure it is still in good shape.

Flashing can be damaged by sun and time, wearing it down, weakening it, and causes cracks and leaks. It can also collect rust over time. In very humid climates and as it rains, your roof is exposed to an abundance of water and air. The second ingredient, water, is always in abundance. This is what causes rust and can severely damage your flashing.

Unfortunately, rust cannot just be covered up. If your metal flashing begins to rust, you should contact a roofing professional and have it placed right away. This will save a lot of money in repairs in the long run.

If you would like to have your flashing replaced or inspected, Billings Construction Group is more than happy to assist you. Just give us a call at 918-600-9565.
